Meet the makers

  Foundry Fern

  Jewellery

  I do my own casting, which most makers at my scale send out. A small centrifugal caster, a burnout kiln and a lot of patience. I carve the originals in blue wax, so the models are properly sculptural: chunky fern-frond rings, ridged bands, a pendant like a rolled leaf. All the silver is recycled and the scrap goes straight back into the crucible. If you want a size that is not on the table, I will take the order and post it within a fortnight.

  Marigold Mending

  My work is visible mending, done deliberately loud. I darn knitwear with bright contrasting wool, patch jeans with sashiko stitching, and turn the repair into the nicest thing about the garment. Alongside the repair service I sell mending kits with hand-wound wool, a darning mushroom turned by a woodworker friend, needles and a printed guide I illustrated. At markets I mend small holes while people wait, usually in about twenty minutes, and they leave wearing it.

  Peculiar Pies

  Food & drink

  I make hand-raised pies with a hot water crust, moulded around a wooden dolly rather than baked in a tin, so they stand up on their own and have that thick shattering pastry.

  I run a bench in a shared workshop and make in weekly batches, which is where the name comes from.

  I keep an indigo vat going in my back yard and feed it like a sourdough starter, which is exactly as odd as it sounds.
