Coptic & Co
Stationery
Coptic binding is the oldest codex structure there is and it lets a book open completely flat, which matters enormously if you are drawing across a spread. I sew every signature onto exposed chain stitches between wooden or board covers, punching the holes by hand with a bodkin. My sketchbooks come in cartridge and mixed media paper, plus a watercolour version with proper cotton rag. Nothing is glued at the spine, so a book of mine will still open flat in thirty years.

I pour into vessels I cast myself from jesmonite, in a speckled terrazzo made with crushed offcuts from previous batches.

I roast on a 3kg drum roaster in a unit under the arches, usually three days a week, and I buy green coffee from two importers who publish what the farmer was paid. Everything is roasted to order for a market, so the bags on my table were done within four days. I keep it to three coffees at a time: a washed Ethiopian, a Brazilian for milk drinks, and whatever seasonal lot I am excited about. Bags are recyclable and I grind to order on the stall.

I paint night scenes in gouache, which is opaque and forgiving and lets me build light out of the dark rather than leaving it as bare paper.
Leaded Light Studio
Glass
I build traditional leaded panels, cutting each piece of glass by hand against a paper pattern, then setting it into H-section lead came and soldering every joint on both sides.

I infuse oils with herbs for six weeks in a sunny window before I make anything, which is the slow step everybody skips.

I hand-letter with a broad-edged pen and a brush, then print the results.
Unwrapped Soap Co

Nothing on my table wears any packaging at all. Soap bars cut from a loaf and sold loose by weight, solid shampoo, a deodorant that comes in a cardboard push-up tube. If you want it wrapped I will put it in a paper bag and that is the extent of the packaging. The soaps are palm-oil free, made with rapeseed and shea, and scented with essential oil blends. I cut the loaf on the stall so people can smell it fresh and choose the thickness of their own bar.

I keep an indigo vat going in my back yard and feed it like a sourdough starter, which is exactly as odd as it sounds.
